Welcome to North Shore

Explore the magic, peace, and quiet of Maui’s North Shore

Instead of being a developed resort destination like other parts of the region, Maui’s North Shore offers an entirely different experience. This part of the island is less developed and less crowded, making it a perfect option for those who want to stay away from the crowds and busyness.
While being a quieter location, North Shore is far from boring! This region is well-loved by locals and visitors for numerous reasons. The North Shore is home to a plethora of chic art galleries, world-class wind-surfing, exhilarating hikes, breathtaking views, idyllic country towns, and heart-pounding adventures. Maui’s North Shore has a rich agricultural history, but the area is now primarily residential with spacious multi-acre lots.

What to Love

  • Sports and recreational activities at Hookipa Beach Park
  • A fine-dining experience at Mama’s Fish House
  • Close access to nature

The North Shore provides a much-needed escape into nature and the solace that comes with it. If you appreciate being close to the great outdoors in a lifestyle that is removed from tourism, then this might just be the perfect area for you.
With a population of just over 2,000 residents, Paia is one of the smallest towns on the North Shore. However, this charming town is packed with shops, boutiques, art galleries, and eateries. As you continue to drive further to Hana, you’ll encounter the rural community of Haiku. Haiku primarily consists of farmland and private homes, which are often hidden out of view from the road. It is home to nearly 8,000 residents and is known for its serene and peaceful atmosphere. Meanwhile, Spreckelsville is a popular community for full-time residents and second home owners alike. Homeowners are drawn here by the central location and authentic lifestyle.

Dining, Shopping, and Entertainment

If you’re looking for an upscale dining experience, then book a table at Mama’s Fish House, located in Paia. This local eatery is famous for its seafood-driven Hawaiian menu and inspiring ocean views. It has received a number of accolades for its popularity and fine-dining experience. In the mood for a more casual dining option? If you enjoy pizza, head over to Flatbread Company. Since 1998, this restaurant has been serving up incredible, woodfire pizza to the community of Paia. Paia Fish Market is another popular dining option that is well-loved for its fresh seafood, attentive staff, and relaxed atmosphere.
If you prefer to make dinner at home, you can tackle your shopping at Mana Foods. This grocery store offers a wide selection of products, the majority of which are organic and local products. There’s even a deli and bakery if you’re looking to grab some fresh bread or pastries.
Located in Haiku, Pauwela Cannery is a shopping center that offers a diverse array of shops. This bustling mall offers 40 shops, including casual dining experiences, wellness and beauty services, art studios, and surfboard shapers. No matter what you’re looking for, there’s a good chance you can find it here.

Things to Do

Known for its world-class surfing and windsurfing, Hookipa Beach Park is a spot that you don’t want to miss. It is one of the top spots for ocean sport and recreation on the entire island. In addition to the professional windsurfing competitions held here, this spot attracts the most skilled surfers and sailors.
Immerse yourself in the arts at Makawo’s very own visual arts center. Located in a 1917 mansion, the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center offers tours and galleries. If you’re looking for a more hands-on experience, consider partaking in a class.
