Considered the center point of the island, Central Maui is home to much of the island’s population. This thriving area offers plenty of attractions and events, as well as off-the-beaten-track activities. This central valley, which comprises Wailuku and Kahului, is often simply referred to as “town”. It is home to Kahului Airport and the island's convenience stores and big-box retailers, such as Target and Costco. 
 
The top attraction in Central Maui is undoubtedly the breathtakingly beautiful Iao Valley State Park. At the entrance to this stunning state park is the idyllic town of Wailuku. The neighboring town of Kahului is a lively town that is home to Maui’s largest shopping mall.

Lifestyle

Central Maui is known for its bustling personality and abundance of opportunities. It’s a place that is well-loved by locals and tourists alike and, once you’ve been here, it’s not hard to understand why. Wailuku is home to just under 18,000 residents, and Kahului boasts a population of over 31,000 residents. 
 
Residents from a diverse array of backgrounds have made their homes in Central Maui. This includes retirees who are looking to settle down, families in need of a safe place to raise their children, and outdoor adventurers who want to be close to the great outdoors.

Dining, Shopping, and Entertainment

If shopping is your guilty pleasure, then chances are you’ll love all that Queen Ka’ahumanu Center has in store for you. This indoor-outdoor mall has an airy, casual ambiance and is home to over 100 stores and restaurants, officially making it the largest mall on the island. Queen K also boasts a variety of entertainment attractions and more than 300 community events throughout the year.
 
No matter what you’re craving, Central Maui has delicious eats for everyone. Ale House, located in Kahului, is a family-friendly eatery that serves American cuisine. They also offer an expansive beverage selection of 36 draft beers and 350 drinks! If you’re in the mood for a more casual meal, then check out Sam Sato’s Inc. This hole-in-the-wall eatery, located in Wailuku, specializes in noodle dishes. Poi By the Pond, nestled in Kahului, is a laid-back restaurant that offers poi-centric dishes and Hawaiian-inspired food.

Things to Do

As the hub of the island, Central Maui provides plenty to see and do. If you’re looking to immerse yourself in nature, Iao Valley State Park provides the perfect place to do just that. This state park is spread over 4,000-acres and 10-mile longs and is home to one of the most famous Maui landmarks - the 1,200 foot Iao Needle. This acclaimed natural rock formation was once used as an altar but now allows visitors to hike and sightsee. 
 
Calling all adventure enthusiasts! The Waihee Ridge Trail is the place for you. Spanning four miles, this ridge consists of steep, difficult hikes and stunning scenic views. If you’re looking to explore the island a different way, then consider taking a horseback tour. Mendes Ranch offers scenic horseback tours that allow visitors to experience nature up-close-and-personal.
 
Immerse yourself in the history of the island by spending the afternoon at Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum. Located in Kahului, this museum will educate you on the history of Hawaiian sugarcane plantations. The museum is one of the most popular attractions on the islands, so be sure to reserve your tickets in advance.
